As four friends from the Wellington Tramping and Mountaineering Club we were very fortunate to be the first recipients of the Simon Bell Memorial Scholarship.
Our planned trip was to go up the Roaring Lion River in the Tasman Wilderness Area to Lake Aorere, and along the Gouland Range to the Heaphy Track. The plan didn’t pan out as when we went in January 2017, the river was too high to cross in its middle reaches where it is gorgy. These photos are from the route we did do; exiting the Roaring Lion via Breakfast Creek to Lake Henderson. It’s frustrating to end a trip earlier than planned and we are all keen to return to such a great piece of the country when our leave balances and the weather permits.
