This rugged chunk of Fiordland National Park has been identified as being suitable for Wilderness Area designation since at least 1981, when FMC ran its Wilderness Conference. This area was proposed among a list of 10 suitable areas, which re-booted the notion of designating Wilderness Areas and resulted in many of these proposals coming to reality.

Take a look at the FMC website to read a more detailed history about this proposed Wilderness Area. You can also read about the legal context and see the current standing of all established and proposed Wilderness Areas.

Over time, FMC is building these pages to show you the classic trips you can do in these places as well as understand their values and how to protect them.
